Apple iPod Touch and iPod Nano Video
With Apple releasing the new iPod Touch and iPod Nano Video, I have to say: I saw this coming, and I'm very disappointed with their presentation of these new products.
First, the iPod Nano Video presentation is disgusting. The visuals on the website are terrible, normally you can't clearly see that the products are digitally altered for presentation purposes. The poor presentation makes the product look cheap, and the widescreen (blown out of proportion to the click wheel) looks ridiculous on that tiny product. Frankly, I personally think they should take a step back on the iPod Nano product line. For once, Apple may have gone too far.
The iPod Touch, while I saw the touch-screen functionality coming, appears to be an iPhone with a different software build. I'm curious as to whether Apple just threw a different image on the iPhone or, like many of their computers, simply disabled some features. In which case, if they did just disable the phone functionality, I can't wait for someone to hack the iPod Touch for the phone capabilities. In the long run, with Apple keeping WiFi enabled, the iPod Touch seems like a highly overpriced palm pilot. With at most 16gb (and no micro-sd expansion) the price tag is ridiculously set at $399.99
Either you can flip your iPod Touch in both directions, or the web guys at Apple made a boo boo.

Of course the pricetag is ridiculous, it's apple. As far as adding the phone capabilities I doubt it since the hardware is missing. The iphone touch is missing the microphone, the camera and a gsm/edge modem. So there is no way to capture your voice or pics. It's a glorified ipod with less storage and functionality. I think it'll do well. That's what everybody really wanted anyway from the iphone. What I think it sucks is the lack of a microphone, they really screwed it up there, with a mic you could have dropped skype or other voip app in it. Apple is trying really hard to cock-block everybody from they're hardware.

After looking at the weight differences of the iPhone and iPod Touch, I'll concur that Apple has most likely removed the phone components. As for the VOIP suggestion, I'm surprised Apple didn't make a .mac voip connection themselves. It's actually pretty funny that you mentioned the hardware lock, Apple products are usually pretty hackable at first, of course this isn't first hand experience speaking.
